The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Central New York Chapter is excited to honor CNY's Finest - a select group of local men and women who are committed to professional growth through a guided fundraising and awareness campaign. The 3-month campaign begins with a special kick-off event for honorees, committee members, and special guests. Throughout the campaign, CNY's Finest honorees will put their creativity, passion and competitive spirit to the test as they work together to raise awareness and funds to support the mission of the CF Foundation. The campaign will culminate with the Finest Finale Celebration at our Savoring the Salt City event which recognizes the honorees' accomplishments individually and as a class, and provides guests with fabulous food and refreshments, entertainment and fun!

On Sunday mornings from 9-12 we will engage in a variety of wildlife center maintenance projects and conservation work.  This will be outside projects with the potential to get dirty.  The activities will range from building and installing house to adding new roofs to buildings, gathering downed trees and brush and removing invasive species.

POSITION OVERVIEW

TeleCare is a free telephone reassurance program which provides a regular connection to isolated and vulnerable members of our community. Volunteer reassurance specialists make outbound telephone calls to enrolled clients and provide medication reminders, welfare checks, and social visits. Calls are up to 10 minutes in length.

Reassurance specialists must have strong verbal communication skills and be able to respectfully and compassionately support clients who present with mental health conditions and life challenges. Comfort talking on the phone and using required computer programs is a must.

TeleCare shifts are available 365 days per year and are: 7am-11am, 11am-3pm, 3pm-7pm, and 7pm-10pm. Volunteers are able to build their own schedule based on their availability. All volunteer training and work is completed at our East Syracuse office.

We are always looking for volunteers with a wide variety of skill sets and will design the volunteer’s “job description” to fit individuals’ interests and skills.

Caring and friendly volunteers work hand-in-hand with both patients and the nursing units; answering call bells, visiting with patients & their families.  They are willing to survey recreational needs and deliver Comfort Cart items, sometimes helping patients to pass the time.

Volunteers greet/visit patients and their families – assisting where needed, ensuring personal items are within reach, run errands, take specimens to the lab and stock supplies.  

A big part of this role is checking in on patients and their loved ones to ensure they are as comfortable as can be, helping visitors navigate the hospital and visiting with patients who may be lonely or bored.

The PACU & Surgery Center step-down units provide care to patients after surgery while recovering from anesthesia until they are moved to either their hospital room or are discharged home.

Volunteers help prepare stretchers, run errands, deliver lab specimens, stock blanket warmers and stock supplies for the PACU and Surgery Center.  Volunteers also discharge patients in wheelchairs or help staff transport patients on stretchers.

Upstate University Hospital's Emergency services are wide ranging from: Adult Emergency and Trauma to Pediatric Emergency, and Geriatric Emergency Medicine (for those 65+).

Volunteers stock supplies, run errands, take specimens to the lab, assist in the transport of patients and prepare stretchers & beds.

Volunteers also round on patients offering non-clinical assistance.  Visitation is offered to patients who are particularly anxious, scared or lonely.

The Child Life Program at Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital helps young patients cope with their fears and anxieties by offering pre-operative sessions and therapeutic activities that are tailored to meet their social, emotional, and developmental needs.

Caring, friendly volunteers work hand-in-hand with Child-Life specialists and pediatric patients in the Children’s Hospital, pediatric Emergency Department & Hematology/Oncology units.

Upon the direction of a staff member, they visit with patients and their families, are willing to survey recreational needs and deliver Activity Cart items, and sometimes help patients to pass the time.  Volunteers may also ensure common areas and items within those areas are sanitized in between use.

Year-Round Volunteers:

Every summer, the children that attend Camp are able to form new bonds and maintain old ones with others who can understand exactly what they are going through.  Unfortunately, at the end of the week when the children go home, they may be far from their friends and may not see them again until the following summer, thereby losing that support.  By providing year-round programming, Camp Good Days hopes to keep the bonds formed at Camp strong, while providing support for the entire family. It takes hundreds of volunteers to keep these such programs going.

Program Overview

The Digital Inclusion Program for Older Adults is developing a training and support program to help older adults make effective and appropriate use of telehealth technology. We believe that telehealth can be particularly beneficial to the older adults we serve by addressing mobility challenges, improving patient-provider communication, and maximizing the value of in-person services.

Volunteer Position Overview

We are seeking a health care professional with experience working with older adults (doctor, nurse, medical social worker) to help us shape this program. In particular, we are looking for assistance to:

· Understand patient perceptions of and concerns regarding telehealth.

· Understand and build program content to address technical impediments to use of telehealth (e.g. devices, device familiarity).

· Understand and build program content to address human impediments to use of telehealth (e.g. communication concerns, desire for personal contact).

· Develop program content to enhance patient-provider communication. E.g., help patient identify questions and goals for a telehealth session and help ensure that the provider understands and is responsive to those questions and goals, including follow up by patient and by provider.

· The program will also address related digital healthcare resources such as patient portals and on-line health information.

Expected Activities and Deliverables

· Conduct research on Telehealth Best Practices and existing resources to support older adults.

· Design and implement 2 focus groups with older adults to gain insight into their needs and perspectives.

· Provide a report from the focus groups, including learnings and proposed best practices.

· Collaborate with staff to design and test materials for future workshops and one-on-one trainings.

Other Details

· This is a hybrid volunteer position, and will require some in-office hours for meetings with staff, as well as meetings with clients at community partner locations.

Our day care is looking for volunteers to engage with the children in fun and enriching activities. Although ideas are listed above, the options are endless and the potential is huge.

This could be a one time volunteer opportunity or a re-occurring one. (Background check is required for re-occurring volunteers, and all paperwork is handled in house for you!)

This is also great for either individuals or small groups of up to 4.

HS Diploma or equivalent, experience working with children birth to age 5 in a classroom/day care setting is preferred but not required. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  OCFS Clearance, background check, and fingerprinting is required

Westcott CC is looking for a volunteer van driver to fill in while full time driver is on vacation or out for a period of time.  Must pass background check and have a clean driving record.  

We need help with organizing and executing fundraisers.  If you are a great organizer, we would love for you to join our team and help us raise funds for our program by being involved with fun fundraising activities.  We are looking for someone who can generate donations for raffles and help organize activities.

The principal tasks of a lesson volunteer include working with students in grooming horses (when students are able to), getting them physically warmed up for their lessons and “sidewalking” during the mounted portion to ensure the safety of our riders. Experience with horses and/or people with different life challenges is not required. From the Ground Up provides a three-hour training for all its volunteers, including our safety guidelines, introduction to basic horse care, and practice in sidewalking. All volunteers are required to attend a training session annually. You must be a minimum of 14 years old to become a lesson volunteer at From the Ground Up.
NOTE: When attending a volunteer training, dress in layers, bring a hat, gloves, sunglasses and wear hard-toe shoes (e.g. hiking boots).

We need experienced equine volunteers to help us take daily care of our equine staff, including feeding, moving horses to and from paddocks and pastures, and “mucking stalls.” Morning and evening volunteer hours are available. Horsecare volunteers get the privilege of spending individual time with our very special equine staff! Horsecare volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

Volunteers come to Food Bank of Central New York's Warehouse to help sort and pack nutritious foods into individual household boxes for distribution throughout our 11 county service region.  

To volunteer for this opportunity, you must be age 14 or older and children between the ages of 14 - 17 must be accompanied by an adult who will also be volunteering.

All volunteers must wear closed toe shoes that fully cover the foot and be able to lift 35 pounds.

Our "Red Door" Food Pantry can use help stocking and sorting food and helping clients when they come through to collect their food essentials. We would love consistent volunteers who can commit to the same day/time weekly. We can also use volunteers who need to complete service/volunteer hours. 

Our Pantry is open Monday through Friday 9am-3:30pm. 

Skanda is seeking help caring for its herd of 11 horses, mostly rescued. This would include, depending on skill level, turning the horses out in the morning and/or in at night, mucking stalls, grooming. 

Volunteers must have considerable equine experience for this activity. 

This is an ongoing need, and we do ask that volunteers for this activity are able to make a relatively consistent, ongoing commitment. 

Central NY Spay Neuter Assistance Program (CNY SNAP) needs volunteers to help with the care and update of the cat shelter. This involves helping taking care of cats in our facility and providing them with food, water, enrichment activities as well as cleaning their cages, litter pans and cat rooms. Additional tasks may include sweeping, mopping, cleaning dishes, laundry and general cleaning activities. 

Shifts and hours can vary based on needs and availability. We have hours available from 8AM to 12PM and 5PM to 9PM, 7 days a week.

The Central NY Spay Neuter Assistance Program (CNY SNAP) in Cortland runs a low-cost spay/neuter clinic every Monday and Saturday. The clinic serves low-income families who want to get their dog or cat fixed and also alters rescued animals in adoption programs.

We need volunteers to help out with non-medical tasks during the clinic, such as helping with sign-in, post-op, paperwork, cleaning, and other tasks.

Shifts are 2-4 hours on Mondays or Saturdays.

Seeking able-bodied volunteers to muck the mini-donkey stalls on Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays. This entails bringing a wheelbarrow and pitchfork into the mini-donkey area and cleaning all the manure out of their stalls and flipping their sawdust bedding so it is fluffy, and adding more bedding when needed. 

This is a favorite activity for volunteers because the mini-donkeys are so friendly and loving, and volunteers also can groom them (brush them). 

This activity is physically engaging but very doable for most people, and a great activity for kids and families.

We are seeking reliable people with relatively consistent schedules who are available for about 90 minutes on Tuesdays and/or Wednesday on an ongoing basis. We provide training and support. 

Our agency has a volunteer opportunity for a transportation volunteer. Many of our clients have a need to navigate the city but have limited or no access to Transporation. These needs include but are not limited to: doctor's appointments, school lessons, grocery stores. Some of the opportunities may be ongoing, but many of them will be irregular. A request for transportation will be sent out with a minimum of 24 hours notice along with details of pick up and drop off locations. 

A volunteer orientation and a background check is required and facilitated through the agency. Proof of license and vehicle registration is required of the volunteer. Additionally, the agency will provide mileage reimbursements. 

We have a volunteer opportunity for transportation volunteers to drive clients to citizenship classes that are hosted at our offices and then back home when the class is completed. This isa an ongoing opportunity that happens every Monday and Tuesday evenings. Volunteers would only have to be responsible for one day unless if there was a desire and availability to do both days. Libraries throughout Madison County are always in need of help with the various tasks that help make them successful. If you are 55 or older and interested in volunteering at a library, contact us at Madison County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. We have formal relationships with a couple of the libraries and can connect you with the volunteer coordinators at other libraries. 

Volunteers will be trained to lead exercise programs that help build strength and improve balance for older residents in Madison County. Must be a registered RSVP volunteer which includes background screening.

The Erie Canal Museum in downtown Syracuse, New York, seeks volunteers to assist with the maintenance and improvement of its historic Locktender's Garden. The garden highlights the unique garden operated alongside Erie Canal locks and features raised beds with a variety of annuals, perennials, vegetables, and herbs. Starting a new non-profit in Oswego County for the recovery community.  RCO is Recovery Community Organization and very needed to help with long term sustainable recovery from alcohol or other drugs. Recovery services include harm reduction and all pathways to recovery.  Education and awareness are part of the mission.  Check out FOR-NY for more information on an RCO.

Outreach includes activities and events for the recovery community, planning and executing as well as recruiting community members and those in recovery.  Gathering data would include surveys and outreach in locations across oswego county, in person and virtually.  Preparing educational activities, flyers, new services, etc. for the recovery community in Oswego County.

By HIS Spirit Ministries holds a thrift shop every first and third Friday and Saturday from 11am-3pm (setup starts at 10am) during the summer. Dear generous volunteers.

We are the central hub for the Vietnamese in Syracuse. Although out main purpose was to connect the Vietnamese people in and around Syracuse area, we have grown to extend our hands to other community as well.  In 2019, we bought a building from one of the community member who allow us to use the building and pay off a little by little each month without any interest. One of the reasons we got the building was to allow our growing children to practice kung fu- a good way to promote health and foster a positive environment for kids to hang out. Summer is when the kids are out of school and we are hoping to have more activities in the summer for these kids. HOWEVER, our building does not have air condition and it can get really hot inside the building in the Summer. There was a central air unit but it was damaged before we obtain the building. We are looking to repair the central air unit or place couple of portable AC unit in the building to allow us to do summer activities within the building.  We hope someone out there can help us or guide us to minimize our cost. 

The Haven at Skanda is seeking strong, reliable people who love animals to feed dinner to the over 150 rescued and endangered horses, goats, pigs, mini-donkeys, chickens, and ducks who live on Skanda. 

This activity takes 2-3 hours, and occurs between 4:30-7:30pm. 

Feeding requires lifting 40-50lbs bales of hay, carrying buckets of water, and lots of maneuvering in and out of animal living areas, barns, and stalls. 

Families and groups of friends have found feeding dinner to the animals to be a great bonding activity. 

While we realize volunteers won't fully know if feeding dinner is a good fit for them until they actually do it and see what it entails, we do ask that only serious applicants apply. We are looking for people who are physically strong and capable, and also who have a reliable, consistent schedule that will allow them to commit to feeding the animals once a week.

The Child Care Solutions’ Board helps to advance our mission, guide our work and enhance our agency’s visibility and effectiveness. We are currently developing a slate of Board nominees for election to 3-year terms beginning in January. Board meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month (except July, August and December) from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Currently meetings are held virtually to protect the health and safety of our Board Members.

The order taker calls registered users of the Madison County Office for the Aging's Grocery Shopping Program and enters their orders into the agency's Instacart and other online shopping services. The order taker also follows up after delivery of the groceries to make sure there were no problems. The order taker maintains communication with the Grocery Shopping Program coordinator.

Lead small groups on hikes on trails in park.

We need people who can drop hay down from our hay mau and bring it up a short ramp into our hay stall and stack it there. The stall holds about 50 bales, and we'd like to keep it full. Volunteers can come do as little or as much as they can. Ideally a team of 2-4 people can get the hay stall filled in less than an hour. This would be a weekly activity.

Kitchen volunteers work under the supervision of our chef daily from 8AM to approx 11AM.

Delivery hours vary according to delivery route but most are completed from 11AM to approx. 1PM.

Meal making is a meaningful way to support our guests as they navigate stressful and oftentimes pivotal moments of life. We are looking for individuals or groups of volunteers who would like to provide a meal for our guests on a monthly basis or occasionally.  As a meal maker you are welcome to cook in our kitchen, or prepare a meal at your home to drop off. Here at the Center for Better Bones we frequently film health education videos regarding bone health and nutrition. We are looking for someone to help with both filming and editing videos for our website. In addition, we would be interested in someone with doodling or drawing skills to help us film some animated style educational videos. While not mandatory, this would be a bonus.
