LiteracyCNY trains volunteers to be adult literacy tutors! Volunteer assignments can be:

Please note:  All volunteers must be at least 18 years old, comfortable using a computer for training purposes and email communications, fluent in English, and have completed high school or the equivalent. 

Training: Volunteers attend a Volunteer Tutor Informational Session via Zoom, then proceed at their own pace with web-based tutor training modules. The complete tutor training work usually takes 14-16 hours.

SHA serves hundreds of Spanish speakers who struggle with English. Your ability to communicate in both English and Spanish will make a significant impact in helping SHA residents impacted by the digital divide. 


Location Details:

SHA's 15 residential properties are dispersed throughout the City of Syracuse. SHA offers low-income housing tax credits, public housing, and housing choice vouchers. These locations serve populations that are significantly impacted by the digital divide.  Drop-in sessions are located in public spaces such as community rooms and computer labs. LiteracyCNY volunteers do not enter private homes.


What You’ll Do:

Assist individuals with beginner-level digital skills, including operating computers, smartphones, and tablets. Support residents in navigating digital platforms and using technology to access essential services and information. Provide bilingual assistance (English/Spanish) to help overcome communication barriers in digital literacy skill-building.

SHA manages 15 residential properties offering low-income housing tax credits, public housing, and Housing Choice Vouchers. These locations serve populations that are significantly impacted by the digital divide. Drop-in sessions are located in public spaces such as community rooms and computer labs. LiteracyCNY volunteers do not enter private homes.

What You’ll Do:

Assist individuals with beginner-level digital skills, including operating computers, smartphones, and tablets. Support residents in navigating digital platforms and using technology to access essential services and information.

Requirements:

Complete our Digital Literacy Volunteer Training to learn about the program’s goals, the communities we serve, and how you can make an impact. Be available for 2-3  two-hour sessions a month for a minimum of 6 months.

Help Adults in Your Community Learn Essential Digital Skills- Volunteer with LiteracyCNY to Bridge the Digital Divide!

LiteracyCNY is looking for dedicated volunteers to help adults in the City of Syracuse learn essential computer, smartphone, and tablet skills. Join us in our mission to bridge the digital divide by volunteering at various Syracuse Housing Authority (SHA) residential properties.

We're Seeking Volunteers for Small Group Digital Literacy Workshops!

LiteracyCNY’s Digital Literacy Program helps adults develop essential skills-such as device use, internet navigation, and using common software like email, Microsoft apps, and Google tools.

We're recruiting volunteers to lead small group workshops (4-6 adults) on essential digital literacy topics! Workshops are 60-120 minutes long and cover topics such as:

iPhone/Android Smartphone Basics.Intro to Searching Online.Recognizing & Avoiding Online Scams .

These workshops are an exciting expansion of our existing no-cost, one-on-one digital literacy services at public sites across Onondaga County.

Requirements:

Complete our Digital Literacy Volunteer Training to learn about the program's goals, the communities we serve, and how you can make an impact.Commit to volunteering with Digital Literacy Program for six months.
