Who We Are
Empower CNY began as a way to improve educational equity in Central New York. Many young students have fallen behind within our education system. To help students combat this issue, Empower CNY connects high school volunteers with them locally for completely free tutoring. Tutors not only enjoy working with the community at a grassroots level, but also have the opportunity to build interpersonal and leadership qualities. Through diverse student leadership, Empower CNY is able to develop activities and programs that meet the needs of all ambitious students. At Empower CNY, we strive to provide the resources for all students to reach their maximum academic potential. We work with students from all forms of educational backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses, and we hope to direct our efforts towards all ambitious students alike.
What We Do
We are a not-for-profit tutoring organization (pending 501(c)(3) status) completely led by volunteer high school students from around the Central New York area. Our tutors are all high school students also from the CNY area who register to tutor via our website. There, they list subjects that they are comfortable tutoring younger students in. Our virtual tutors are paired with tutees after a virtual interview, and in-person tutors are matched ‘on-the-spot’ with students based on their own academic strengths after they arrive at a tutoring session. Virtual tutoring sessions are scheduled for an hour long each weekend, while in-person sessions vary between 1.5 hours and 2 hours. The sessions usually take place on weekends, but the times are posted on the registration forms when students go to sign up.
