Who We Are

We Rise Above The Streets Recovery Outreach, Inc. is a non profit, 501(c)3 corporation that provides help for the homeless, underrepresented, and anyone in need of food, clothing, or any resources we can provide. Al-amin Muhammad is the founder and executive director of We Rise Above the Streets Recovery Outreach Inc. He comes highly qualified to represent the poor and marginalized because for 10 years, he was homeless on the streets of Atlanta, Georgia. He was raised in the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, a Catholic, Haitian home. Although he experienced many other life-threatening incidents, by the age of 15, he had been lured into a life of gang violence and drugs. At 25 years old, he was shot in a drive-by and nearly lost his life. One event inspired him to change his life. It was that question that inspired him to turn his life around and serve others. 2008, a fellow inmate asked him what he would have left behind as a legacy for his two daughters. It was that question that inspired him to turn his life around and serve others. He connected to his Creator, turned to Islam, graduated from Emory College in atlanta, and became an addiction counselor and a life coach. In 2014, he founded We Rise Above The Streets and began to serve the homeless in Atlanta, GA.  In 2015, he moved to  Syracuse, NY, where he continues to serve the homeless every Saturday at Sandwich on Sandwich Saturdays. Al-amin and the 100’s  of volunteers in the community who have served more than 10,000, sack lunches  to homeless individuals and food-insecure family households in the 8 years of Sandwich Saturday and since he’s been a resident of Syracuse. Through his Sandwich Saturday program, more than 1000 people are provided a meal, clothes, shoes, and hygiene products every week. He has also coordinated and held several cookouts and Thanksgiving dinners at St. Lucy brings awareness to poverty and homelessness.  His organization, a food pantry every Thursday for food insecure families, has provided hot meals, hygiene, and winter items for more than 20,000 people collectively the homeless and food insecurity family's household.  We Rise Above The Streets has partnered with various organizations and schools in the area, spreading his message of compassion and encouragement to all who he encounters. Al-amin mentors at risk youth in the city’s most challenging schools have inspired many to become servants of our community and has been a beacon of light in our city, invoking us to action. He was featured on CBS This Morning News they will be filming a Part 2 of his in March 2023, and recently recognized by Jay-Z Rock Nation on black history month and received 2021 Exemplary Leadership during Covid-19 Award, the Social Justice Award from Syracuse University for his efforts where he was also honored by the mayor of Syracuse with his own holiday March 19, Al-amin Muhammad Day and the American Red Cross 2020 Real Hero Award- and  Delta Sigma Theya Sorority Ic.  2021 Marjorie Dowdell Fortitude Award TLC The Leadership Classroom 2021 Exemplary Leadership during Covid-19 Recently. He’s part of Onondaga County/Syracuse Human Rights Commission Board, CNY Regional Healthcare Equity Task Force, He’s an author of an independent best book selling Called My Purpose of Life One man’s tale inspires a wave of humanity, he led the protest for the young man who was doused with water by an employee at Dunkin Donuts. Al-Amin is a full-time advocate and activist. Currently, he is in a partnership with the Schools District in Onondaga County and all over Central New York to serve the children and families in the neighborhood. He has also initiated the We Rise Above The Streets Youth Ambassador Program in Central New York and Chicago. Al-amin is living proof that anyone can successfully rise above their condition. He has been instrumental in helping many of our citizens rise above the conditions of homelessness, mental poverty, and feelings of abandonment. He is the advocate for and the voice of the least among us.
