What We Do

FOCUS Greater Syracuse, Inc. is 501(c)(3) organization that provides programs, services, and reports that increase civic engagement, participation, and education in the Central New York community.

For over 25 years, FOCUS has successfully connected the community with local governments, organizations, and businesses to bring about positive changes in our community and inspire civic engagement.

  • FOCUS Forums: Each month FOCUS hosts free, public forums on a topic of interest to the region presented by experts in education, environment, culture and the arts, recreation, business, health, and public service.

  • Citizens Academy: An 11-week program for community members to discover the operations of government and public service in Onondaga County. Participants discuss topics such as economic development, health, environment, safety, and crime prevention with panels of experts at venues such as Common Council Chambers, Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant, the Justice Center, etc.

  • Wisdom Keeper Celebration: Each year FOCUS celebrates the achievements and shares the lessons of successful Wisdom Keeper(s) at the not-for-profit organization’s sole fund-raiser of the year.

  • Research, Contracts, Reports, and Initiatives: FOCUS engages in community-centered research initiatives and publishes reports and recommendations based on these findings, many of which are utilized by Onondaga County and the City of Syracuse, as well as other organizations, businesses, and by individuals for future planning. Examples include the Livability Alliance of Onondaga County, CNY-CAN, PCORI, Citizens Response to Pandemic Flu: CDC, "FOCUS on Onondaga Lake,” “Shaping an Age-Friendly CNY.”
